METU DESIGN 15

The Faculty of Art and Creative Industries at Budapest Metropolitan University is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its design programmes this year.

To mark the occasion, the faculty’s lecturers and students presented a month-long programme series and a large joint exhibition at the Eötvös10 Community and Cultural Centre, showcasing the interconnectedness of different areas of design.

The METU DESIGN 15 exhibition offered a unique opportunity for students of the Architecture BA, Environmental Design BA, Craft Culture BA, Textile Design BA, Interior Design MA, Product Design MA, and Fashion and Textile Design MA programmes to exhibit their works together in one shared space for the first time. The exhibition highlighted the diversity of design—from meticulously crafted objects, jewellery and fashion accessories to fashion collections, architectural and product design models, unique patterns, and textile installations.

Visitors encountered creations born from the meeting of creative thinking and social sensitivity, gaining insight into how an idea becomes a fully realised design concept.

The exhibition was accompanied by several related programmes, each highlighting the multifaceted role of design from different perspectives.

During the guided tour, Kriszta Remete habil. DLA, costume designer and head of the fashion specialisation in the Fashion and Textile Design MA programme, guided visitors through the exhibited works together with her students.

Visitors heard directly from the creators about the background and inspiration behind the projects, gaining insight into the design processes and the points of connection between the various disciplines.

Through these shared discussions, a new kind of dialogue emerged between the different fields of design, illustrating how fashion, textile, product, and architectural thinking build upon one another.

At the workshop titled “The Treasure You Wear”, Anna Börcsök DLA, lecturer of the Craft Culture BA programme and narrative jewellery designer, together with Dominik Felgyői, alumnus of METU’s Jewellery and Accessories Design BA, introduced participants to the personal, story-driven world of jewellery design.

During the workshop, participants gave new life to everyday objects—buttons, keys, screws—infused with personal memories or stories.

The closing event of the series, SECTIONS – Cross-Sections, featured creators who, although they graduated from METU’s Interior Design MA programme, now work in various fields such as design, research, branding, visual design, and technology.

Alexandra Kis-Baraksó, biomaterial researcher (Szimbio Lab), along with Eszter Marosi, Flóra Németh, and Tekla Pekarek representing the Flip Interior Design Studio, shared their insights on how interior design knowledge can open new pathways across different areas of the creative industries.

The METU DESIGN 15 programmes were held as part of Budapest Design Week, bringing the diversity of contemporary design thinking, student creativity, and cross-disciplinary dialogue closer to the public for an entire month. The exhibition and its accompanying events not only celebrated the achievements of fifteen years of design education, but also pointed toward future directions.

The works and presentations highlighted that design today is no longer merely about creating objects: mindset, collaboration, and social sensitivity play a crucial role in creative practice.

METU’s community of young designers and educators represents an open, reflective, and inspiring approach—demonstrating time and again that design has the power to shape both our environment and our human connections.
